4 Reasons to Choose a Local Marketing Agency

Key Takeaways

Here are 4 reasons why it is often better, if you are a business marketing to a local audience, to choose a locally based marketing agency.

  • Service prices generally reflect the local market.
  • A local agency truly understands your community, which allows for creating communications that build more genuine trust and connection with your audience.
  • Supporting local is good for your community—and good for business.
  • While agency size doesn’t guarantee quality, local firms are often able to provide more personalized, tailored strategies compared to the “cookie-cutter” approach sometimes found at larger agencies.

Many of my blog posts stem from conversations I’ve had with clients or from issues currently being discussed in the marketing world. Here in the Bloomington/Ellettsville, Indiana area, one topic that has recently made its way across news channels and social media is the City of Bloomington’s recent rebranding.

In short, the city paid a significant amount of money ($95,000) for a result that was poorly received: a nondescript “B” that critics say could just as easily represent any old town, bank, app, anything. Now, the purpose of this article is not to add criticism to the city’s choice (nor comment on people pointing out the logo’s resemblance to human anatomy, heehee). Instead, this is an opportunity to talk about why it’s often better, if you are a business or organization marketing to a local audience, to choose a locally based marketing agency.

Here are a 4 reasons why.

Reason 1: Prices Generally Reflect the Local Market

Generally speaking, the cost of goods and services tends to track with an area’s cost of living. Here in the southern part of Indiana, professional services are often priced lower than in larger cities like Indianapolis. Leaving the Midwest, the difference becomes even more noticeable when comparing our region to major metropolitan areas in other states. Having worked for a larger agency outside of Indiana, and having helped clients transition away from out-of-state contracts, I can tell you firsthand that prices are often much higher than what you’ll find locally. In areas with higher incomes, I’m sure service prices are on par, but from our perspective in Indiana, that cost difference is a factor to consider.

Reason 2: A Local Agency Understands What Makes Your Area Unique

The very first thing a marketing agency should do when they begin working with a company is research. To do marketing right, you need to understand everything about who your target audience is and what problems they need to solve, your unique selling proposition (USP), competitor research, business context, the most effective channels to communicate to your audience, and so much more.

Thanks to the internet, it’s possible for a company from afar to do this kind of research about their clients. But—I would argue that there is a difference between researching a community and truly knowing it. Local agencies live and work in the communities they serve. They understand the cultural nuances that matter when you are marketing to a local audience, things like regional phrasing (ex: pop vs. soft drink), local lore, notable area events, or high school sports rivalries. Having this understanding helps you create communications that build trust and genuine connection with your audience.

Reason 3: Supporting Local Business Builds Community

Admittedly, it’s a bit surprising that a city that prides itself on “local first” would choose to use an outside agency for something so incredibly local as the town’s branding. A city’s visual identity ideally would reflect the character of the place it represents, so there’s something to be said for bringing local creativity to the task.

Beyond marketing, there is value in supporting the businesses and professionals who live and work alongside you every day. These are the people who invest in the community and want to see it thrive. When you hire locally, you’re helping to keep those dollars at home. Strong local economies are built through relationships and reciprocity. If you want community members to support your business, it makes sense to support theirs as well.

Reason 4: Local Doesn’t Mean Lower Quality

There is sometimes an assumption that larger or “big-city” agencies automatically provide better work, but that is not necessarily the case. At a bigger agency, where higher client volume is needed to maintain the cost of larger teams, it can be easy to become “just another account,” Out of necessity, there may be a bit more “cookie cutter” management.

Local agencies, on the other hand, are often able to provide more personalized strategies. You’re more likely to have a direct relationship with the people who are working for you. The marketing agency, with their reputation on the line, will often try really hard to do a good job for you.

Of course, there are excellent large agencies and mediocre local agencies. Size and location alone don’t determine the quality of the work, but being local can provide an advantage when it comes to personal attention, accountability, and creating a strategy tailored to your business.

Conclusion

Okay, I said I wouldn’t gang up on the City of Bloomington, haha. I genuinely prefer constructive discussion over criticism, but I just have to say, I could give a list of designers off the top of my head (us included, of course) who could have provided a much more Bloomington-unique result for significantly less than $95,000. (One could also make a comment on government spending here, but we won’t go down that rabbit hole. 😉) Truly, I would much rather all of this be a learning experience for the City—and for all of us—about where we invest our time, money, and trust.
